St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney is committed to reconciliation and improving outcomes working with the community.
Collaborating with our Aboriginal health director, Aboriginal Elder consumer representatives, health professionals, mission and support services, we are currently working to deliver on our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and Closing the Gap targets including:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, employment and education outcomes
All patients being admitted to St Vincent’s Private Hospital are asked about their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Status on admission forms, to help facilitate culturally appropriate care.
Currently all staff at St Vincent’s Private are completing ‘Respecting the Difference’ training to help ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, staff and visitors are welcomed to a culturally respectful environment. Our policies provide guidance for our clinical staff and our Aboriginal health director is available to consult with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The Aboriginal health director or her team also delivers face to face in-service education for our clinical and support services.
Major events such as Closing the Gap Day, national Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week are held throughout the year to highlight our commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. These important events also serve as an opportunity for staff education and community engagement.
