Nursing

A message and warm welcome from our Director of Nursing & Clinical Services – Adjunct Professor Jose Aguilera OAM

Our Mission, the healing ministry is the reason why we exist as a healthcare provider.

At SVPHS, our nurses along with all other members of the healthcare team strive to deliver the highest standards of quality and safety with a commitment to excellence in compassionate patient centred care.

We acknowledge and are grateful for the long tradition of excellence that we have inherited from our predecessors.  We are equally proud of the exceptional clinical and patient experience outcomes that we have achieved and continue to pursue.  These are demonstrated by excelling within the ACHS accreditation program, where SVPHS was granted the inaugural “Group Gold Medal” in 2014 for delivering consistently high and innovative quality and safety standards over the past decades.

The achievement of Magnet Recognition in 2011 signalled once again our commitment to pursue national and international standards of benchmarking excellence.

We are able to accomplish these goals by investing in our nurses and clinical teams thorough education, training and research.  St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney has one of the most experienced and highly educated team of nurses in Australia and beyond.  We offer our nurses unprecedented opportunities for personal/professional growth and development in an environment providing superior resources and support, stimulating and rewarding clinical facilities and regular opportunities for collegial/social exchange.

Building a culture of success has enabled the Hospital to achieve a remarkable level of engagement amongst our nurses, where more than 77% of nurses believe that St Vincent’s Private is a “truly great place to work”.

Our commitment to you as a patient is to provide you with the highest standards of nursing practice and patient centred care.  We aim at partnering with you and you loved ones in ensuring that you are not only involved in your care but achieve the best possible experience whilst under our care.

Our nursing care

Our nursing care is provided by a professional and experienced team of registered nurses, enrolled nurses, assistants in nursing, patient care orderlies and, as we are a teaching hospital, medical and nursing students. We have established partnerships with several universities that enable our nurses to continue to further their professional development.

We have Clinical Nurse Consultants in various specialities such as wound management, stomal therapy, breast care, bone marrow transplantation and chemotherapy. The Clinical Nurse Consultants consult with clinical nurses to guide care and provide a level of expertise in their specific area to ensure the best health outcomes for our patients.

Our vision focuses us on three strategic themes: “Delivering Outstanding Customer Service, achieving operational excellence and striving for continued clinical excellence and innovation”.

Our objectives are as follows:

  • Become the recognised health care facility of choice providing exceptionally safe and quality patient centred care;
  • Become an employer of choice where staff are engaged, enjoy working, providing professional excellence in compassionate care to our patients;
  • Further develop an environment and culture of inquiry and openness where staff feel comfortable challenging the norm, stimulating creativity, innovation and accountability;
  • Lead the way in nursing education, practice development and research, to support nursing practice and patient centred care; and
  • Develop strong working relationships and partnerships with external stakeholders as well as further developing and strengthening relationships with VMOs allied health carers and health insurers.

We provide nursing experience opportunities to final year school students so that they can work in a supernumerary capacity and also support a program of aboriginal cadetship in nursing.

We remain committed to our mission and vision of becoming a recognised centre of excellence nationally and internationally. In 2011, St Vincent’s Private Hospital, Sydney was first awarded Magnet Recognition, the highest and most notable international credential a healthcare organization can achieve for nursing excellence. Magnet recognition is an ongoing 4 year commitment and recognizes hospitals that epitomize high level of staff satisfaction and excellence in patient experience and clinical outcomes.
